Ministerial Visit to Cedars

Cedars Youth & Community Centre today received a ministerial visit from The Rt. Hon Francis Maude MP.  He is the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, which now takes particular interest over the 63 MyPlace centres across the country.

The minister was very interested in the day-to-day running of the centre, the financial constraints it faces and the groups of users that come through the doors of the centre. The 45 minute visit took in a tour of the centre and a discussion with young people from Shaftesbury High School, who use the facility regularly.   The design and layout of the centre particularly caught the minister’s attention with him saying that it was a lot different to many youth & community centres he had attended or seen over his times.

The centre sees regular footfall of nearly 1,000 people each week ranging from Tots provision to Over 50s sessions, with the youngest member being 4 and the oldest 92 yrs.

Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust, which runs the centre, also received some positive news later in the day, with the confirmation from visiting assessors that it had been awarded the London Youth silver award status.  Steve Williams, who manages the centre, said “To be able to showcase the centre to a senior government official is particularly pleasing and to be able to share both the good and the challenging aspects of a facility.”   He went on to add “to receive the silver award from London Youth is fantastic news and demonstrates that we have a good base to work towards the gold award later this year.”
